How to Safely Remove Press-On Nails: A Step-by-Step Guide

Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin the process of removing your press-on nails, it’s important to gather all the necessary supplies. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Acetone nail polish remover
- Cotton balls or pads
- Nail file or buffer
- Cuticle oil or moisturizer
- Orange stick or cuticle pusher
Make sure you have everything within reach so that you don’t have to stop halfway through the process. Having all the supplies ready beforehand will make the process go more smoothly and help avoid any unnecessary frustration.
Soften the Adhesive
The next step in removing your press-on nails is to soften the adhesive that is holding them in place. You can do this by soaking a cotton ball or pad in acetone nail polish remover and placing it on top of your nails. Make sure the cotton is saturated and covers the entire nail.
Wrap your fingertips in aluminum foil to hold the cotton balls in place and keep the acetone from evaporating too quickly. Leave the cotton balls on your nails for about 10-15 minutes to give the acetone time to break down the adhesive.
After 10-15 minutes, remove the foil and cotton balls from your fingertips. You should notice that the adhesive has become soft and gooey, making it easier to remove the press-on nails.
Gently Lift the Nails
Once the adhesive has been softened, it’s time to remove the press-on nails. Use an orange stick or cuticle pusher to gently lift the edge of the press-on nail. Be careful not to use too much force, as this can damage your natural nails.
If the press-on nail does not come off easily, do not pull or force it off. Instead, apply more acetone to the cotton balls and re-wrap your fingertips with foil for another 5-10 minutes. This will help to further soften the adhesive.
Repeat the process of gently lifting the edge of the press-on nail until it comes off completely. If there is any residue left behind, use a nail file or buffer to gently remove it.
Remove Any Residue
After removing the press-on nails, you may notice some adhesive residue left on your natural nails. To remove this residue, use a nail file or buffer to gently buff away the remaining adhesive. Be gentle to avoid damaging your natural nails.
If you prefer, you can also use a cotton ball or pad soaked in acetone to remove any leftover adhesive. Simply apply the acetone to the cotton and rub it over your nails until the residue is gone.
Once all the residue has been removed, wash your hands with soap and warm water to get rid of any remaining acetone. Dry your hands thoroughly before moving on to the final step.
Give Your Nails Some TLC
After removing press-on nails, it’s important to give your natural nails some TLC. They may be weak or brittle from the adhesive and removal process, so it’s essential to take care of them.
Apply a cuticle oil or moisturizer to your nails and cuticles to hydrate and nourish them. This will help to prevent your nails from becoming dry and brittle. You can also give your nails a break from any further damage by avoiding any additional manicures or press-on nails for a few days.
It’s important to take care of your nails to ensure they remain healthy and strong. With a little bit of TLC, your nails will look and feel great in no time.
