How to Unsubscribe from an App: A Step-by-Step Guide

Why Unsubscribe from an App?

Unsubscribing from an app can be necessary for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you no longer use the app or find it helpful, or maybe you found a better alternative. Maybe you subscribed to a free trial and forgot to cancel before the trial ended, and now you’re being charged. Whatever the reason, it’s important to know how to unsubscribe from an app to avoid unwanted charges and keep your app subscriptions organized.

Check Your Subscription Status

Before attempting to unsubscribe from an app, it’s important to know if you’re currently subscribed and if you’re being charged. To do this on an iPhone or iPad, go to your device’s Settings, tap on your name, then tap on Subscriptions. On an Android device, open the Google Play Store app, tap on the menu icon, then tap on Subscriptions. From here, you can see a list of your active subscriptions and the status of each one, including if you’re being charged and when the subscription renews. Knowing this information will help you determine if you need to unsubscribe and how soon you should do so.

Cancel Your Subscription through the App Store

If you subscribed to an app through the App Store, you can cancel your subscription directly through your Apple ID account. To do this, go to your device’s Settings, tap on your name, then tap on Subscriptions. Find the app subscription you want to cancel and tap on it, then select “Cancel Subscription” and confirm. Keep in mind that if you don’t see the subscription you’re looking for, it may be under a different Apple ID or associated with a different app store account. In that case, you’ll need to sign in to the correct account to access your subscriptions.

Cancel Your Subscription through the App’s Website

If you subscribed to an app directly through the app’s website, you’ll need to cancel your subscription through the website as well. Look for a “My Account” or “Subscription” section on the app’s website and sign in to your account. From there, you should be able to access your subscription settings and cancel your subscription. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully, as some apps may require you to cancel a certain number of days before your subscription renews to avoid being charged again.

Uninstall the App and Confirm Cancellation

After canceling your subscription, it’s a good idea to uninstall the app from your device to avoid accidental charges in the future. To uninstall an app on an iPhone or iPad, press and hold the app icon until it starts to wiggle, then tap the “x” in the corner of the icon. On an Android device, go to the app drawer, press and hold the app icon, then drag it to the “uninstall” or “delete” option. Once the app is uninstalled, double-check your subscription status to make sure the cancellation went through successfully. If you were being charged through the app store, you should no longer see the subscription listed in your subscriptions. If you canceled through the app’s website, you should receive an email confirmation of the cancellation.
